Day 366-And to Cap it Off...

And.....we're done? Really? How about that. There were times when it seemed like the year* was flying by, and, closer to the end, when it seemed like time was just dragging. But on the whole, it does seem like a quick year.

I had debated if I was going to do something "themed" to the last post, or just shoot whatever I wanted. This is, I suppose, a good compromise for the two sides in my head. Most of those caps were collected by The Brother, though I have added a few of my own along the way.

So now that I'm done, what can I say? I don't know if I picked up any fancy new skills or techniques along the way, but I'd like to think I improved on the approaches I've already acquired. I certainly found that the ordinary--the stuff we see everyday--has a lot to offer, if we just take a moment to look at it. The theme weeks were fun, and a nice way to stretch myself a bit.

So what's next? Well, I'm taking a month off. It'll be weird tomorrow, not having to take a picture. But I'm going to pick up some new gear in the next few weeks, and start a new project in April. I think you'll enjoy it. As soon as it's going, there will, of course, be a website for it. I just bought some new software, so I plan on updating my actual website. And, this isn't the last huzzah for this project, so there's always Phase II.

Lastly, thanks to everyone who stopped by, left comments, or gave me your thoughts otherwise. I hope it was as interesting for you as it was for me. This site will remain up, so feel free to pop in and look around.

That's all I got.

Dave

*it was, of course, a leap year last year, so I opted to include the extra day.

Day 365--Attack!

Why do cats enjoy string so much? Even George gets himself all in a tizzy over a piece of string in front of him. Must be a cat thing.

Dave

Day 364--All About Soul

Gospel celebration at Lewis & Clark. Cherise has a set of pipes on her.

Dave

Day 363--Josephine's 'Magination

No actors were harmed during this scene, thankfully.

Dave

Day 362--Rock Star?

One more silly self-portrait before all is said and done here.

Day 361--Please Sir, Can I Have Some More?

Remember the plant I showed you back in December? Hmm? Well, you might recall I forgot the name at the time. Well, it's a cyclamen. And his name is Oliver. He's doing quite well, thank you.

Dave

Day 360--Charles Bracelen FLood

He does so much authoring we use all three of his names.

Day 359--This City of Mine

I've been making occasional trips downtown for the past two years or so gathering images for a (hopeful) show by the same name as this post. I used today's day off for what I think is the last installment of images. Now I just need to sit down and pick out enough for an exhibit. Oh and hope that they all work together. I was never 100% sure what I thought the theme of the project would be. At first it was minuscule details that caught my attention. But over time it shifted more to interesting angles on the stuff that people probably see all the time and take for granted. But we'll see how it all shakes out in the end.

Anyways. I like this picture.

Dave

p.s. Are we really so close to the end of this endeavor? Crazy.

Day 358--Wish You Were Here

Not my footprint. But whose?

Dave

Day 357--Puzzled

It seemed like a good idea at the time. Now I think I'm just getting a headache.

Dave

Day 356--The Time is Now

That's what the look on her face seems to say to me, anyways.

Day 355--She's Still Back There, Isn't she?

I went to the zoo today and got a lot of great shots. Choosing just one was nigh impossible. This image won out, simply because of the juxtaposition of elements here. Is the penguin trying to tell me something? Probably not, but I can pretend he is.

Dave

Day 354--Front Row Seat

The lighting sucked, so any hope of action shots was quickly dashed. I like this just fine, though.

Dave

Day 353--Pipe Dreams 2

Please ignore the water damage.

Day 352--Night Moves 5

Usually, full moons are photographic distractions--just "that big thing in the sky keeping me from seeing stars." But tonight was different. I like the way it looked behind the roof.

Day 351--Sneaky

You have to be quick with her, or you'll miss moments like this.

Dave

Day 350--I Caught You a Delicious Bass

Oh, do I find that funny. It's Tom's bass, actually. I'm just borrowing it.

Dave

Day 349--Mr. Bridge

Sadly, the Mrs. didn't want to be in the picture.

Dave

Day 348--Cut the Cord

A rare moment of untangledness. Probably because I don't use the phone all that much.

Dave

Day 347--Pressing Matters

Least used appliance in my house, I'm pretty sure.

Dave

Day 346--Condiment Nation

I feel like this is the kind of thing I would have drawn back in beginning art.

"thank you"

Dave

Day 345--Jonathan Stroud

Why don't more authors draw viking-type guys during their presentations? Hmm?

Dave

Day 344--Are We Not Men?

I thought the 3-D commercials during the Super Bowl were less than impressive. I did get a good picture out of it, though.

Dave

Day 343--Let's Bowl Two

It's nice to see bowling alleys keeping the whole 'retro' thing going, if only in their signs.

Dave

Day 342--Look at the Bones!

Roger was far less excited about seeing Sue the T-Rex than me. Oh well. Can't win 'em all.

Dave

Day 341--Unchained

This feels like album art, but I can't say in what capacity.

Dave

Day 340--Snow Dog

I do like my cats, but you can't really expect this kind of thing from them. Yesterday was a snow day, which is pretty rare in the world of the library. I couldn't very well do sledding, since I did that on my last snow day. So this was a nice alternative.

Day 339--By Yonder Window Light

See, I can do Shakespeare, too.

It was hard to tell if Chip was looking at me or out the window. Turns out she was watching me. I'm amazed she sat so still.

Also, please enjoy that unplanned alliteration.

Dave

Day 338--Dawn of a New Season

It feels like I just posted my farewell picture for baseball not that long ago. And, while REAL baseball is still some time off, the idea of Spring Training is nice.

(or I was desperate to shoot something last night, and this is what I went with.)

Dave

Day 337--The Barrow Downs

Only my second LotR reference, if memory serves. The other was exceptionally vague, but sharp-eyed viewers might have caught it. Anyone who DOES find it will win....something.

Dave

Day 336--Night Moves 4: Clayton

I imagine I only looked a little suspicious standing on top of a mostly deserted parking garage with my tripod. No visits from The Man this time, though.

Dave

Day 335--Mo Willems (and friends)

He made a comment whilst signing books about wishing he could be invisible, since the characters in his books are more important than he is. I wonder if other authors feel that way.

Dave

Day 334--Happy Feet

Kelly Sullivan does this a lot better than me.

(by the by, the last two images were edited in Photoshop CS4. can you tell?)

Dave

Day 333--Eat at Joe's

Neon and incandescent lights. Together at last.

Dave

Day 332--You've Got to Know When to Hold 'em, Know When to Fold 'em

There are many things in life I can do pretty well. Playing poker is not one of them.

Dave

Monday, January 19, 2009

Day 331--Escape These Caves of Ice

If it wasn't for the bridge, this would look pretty desolate.

Dave

Day 330--Marshall Stack

Not really. But if my computer was hooked up to a Marshall stack, it would make gaming a lot more exciting.

Dave

Day 329--A La Cart

Admit it: you all come here for the puns as much as the pictures.

Dave

Day 328--Clues

Always nice when we can get the teens in at work.

Dave

Day 327--Curtains

Was I desperate for an idea?

Yeah, yeah I was. Sorry.

Dave

Day 326--I Think I'm Going Bald

That's a Rush song, by the by.

Day 325--What's So Funny? Bonus edition!

Erica asked if I had done a self-portrait for my laugh series, and I had thought about it, but forgot along the way. So when she asked, it reminded me, and, well here we are. As I've said before, I'm nothing if not flexible.

So it was a bit of a challenge to do this one, since I had to be laughing at something AND messing with actually taking the picture. Thankfully, auto-focus made life easier, and I was able to keep one hand on the shutter, and the rest of me focused on being amused by the most consistently funny thing out there (to me, anyways): MST3K.

And this might be the most normal picture of myself throughout this entire project.

Dave

Day 324--Cosmic Hippo

Lit by nothing more than a laser pointer.

Cool, huh?

Dave

Sunday, January 11, 2009

Day 323--A Horse is a Horse, of Course

Sharp-eyed viewers might recognize Tobey from my alphabet series last year. I liked the contrast of his whiskers against the rest of his body. And the odd proportions inherent to being a horse.

Dave

Day 322--What's So Funny? Part 7

When push comes to shove, you can always count on your family.

I was a little worried, because I knew it can take a lot to get a good laugh out of Mike. I forget what he found so amusing, but it was after the "main" session of shooting. You just have to be ready for these things.

Dave

Day 321--What's So Funny? Part 6

Desiree and Austin were nice enough to come to my house, since time didn't allow for anything else. My favorite thing about this is (if you can spot it) the tear on Austin's cheek. So he wins the award for most intense laugh. Yay?

Day 320--What's So Funny? Part 5

I finally managed to have people facing each other for this pair! Stacey was the first person this week to succumb to tickling, mostly because I've had people too far apart for that to be an option. But she was close enough to Randy for him to grab her feet. And he took full advantage of that option. He proved to be a bit more stoic, but Stacey's attempts at silly faces did him in. The faces weren't funny, apparently, but TRYING to make faces was amusing.

Whatever works is fine by me.

Dave

Day 319--What's So Funny? Part 4

I was excited at first, because I had a picture of Vince from the other side, so it gave the appearance that he and Kathy were laughing at each other (which, basically, they were). Sadly, it was just out of focus enough for me to scrap it. Oh well. But rest assured that there was some good interaction going on.

One of the best parts of this is that I've enjoyed myself as much as anyone else (well, I hop they've had fun). Laughing seems to be pretty contagious. And that's a good thing.

Dave

Day 318--What's So Funny? Part 3

More pets were used for humor, in this case, an unsuspecting beagle. I'm sure Penny (the dog) will be thrilled to know she helped get a good laugh or two out of Sara and Julie.

So now that I've had cats and dogs utilized in this little endeavor, which critter produces the bigger laugh? I think I'll have to give a slight edge to the cats. But only just so. I mean, in the right hands, a pet rock could be just as effective.

Day 317--What's So Funny? Part 2

One of the advantages of owning cats is that they can be used for comic purposes. Erica knows that first-hand (assuming she didn't know it already). And Dave? I think Erica was doing something amusing with her lip. I could be wrong.

I'm messing around with b/w conversions for this project, so if any of them look a little funky, that's why.
